Mashed potatoes are usually a hit or miss for me. There are times when I eat mashed potatoes and think to myself, “mashed potatoes are alright.”

Then, there are times when I am served some creamy whipped mashed potatoes, and I feel like mashed potatoes maybe, just maybe, are better than french fries.

My First Awesome Mashed Potatoes Experience

In the beginning, I always thought that mashed potatoes were not anything special, but my opinion changed the first time I had mashed potatoes from scratch.

Do not get me wrong, I never had mashed potatoes that were not edible, but from my experience, those awesome mashed potatoes are not that awesome unless they are made from scratch.

On top of making this whipped creamy mashed potatoes recipe from scratch, the butter combined with the right amount of seasoning is making me want to do a few backflips, and I never did gymnastics a day in my life.

Should you whip mashed potatoes?

When you are making mashed potatoes you do not have to whip them, however, if you want your potatoes to have a more smooth consistency, then whipping them will be your best option.

What is the difference between mashed potatoes and whipped potatoes?

The difference between mashed potatoes and whipped potatoes is that one method uses more manual labor than the other.

Mashed potatoes are developed by literally mashing the potatoes with a utensil, an electric hand mixer, or a potato masher.

Because of the nature of this method, the mashed potatoes may have lumps in them. On the other hand, whipped potatoes use a blender to get a smoother consistency.

The creamy whipped mashed potatoes recipe has the best of both worlds. The recipe involves mashing the potatoes, but we will cook the potatoes beforehand.

Doing this will help the potatoes keep a smooth consistency without putting them into a blender. Either way, you will have an awesome side dish.

Why aren’t my mashed potatoes creamy?

Your potatoes not coming out creamy may be due to overworking them. Here is what I mean by that.

The more you mash the potatoes, the more starch is released. Once too much starch is released, the potatoes will become less creamy and gummier.

What is the best tool to mashed potatoes?

The best tool to go with is an electric hand mixer. Use that to make your awesome mashed potatoes. However, if you don’t have an electric hand mixer, the second-best tool to use for mashed potatoes is a potato masher.

Should you salt mashed potato water?

Salting the water that is used for boiling the potatoes is not necessary, however, if you want to do that, go right ahead. The reason why this step is not necessary is that we will season the potatoes during the mashing process.

What else can you use to mashed potatoes?

If you do not have a potato masher or electric hand mixer, then you can use a spoon, fork, or hands if you are down to get a little dirty.

Should I rinse potatoes before boiling?

You do not have to rinse off the potatoes before boiling them, however, the rinse process will help get rid of an excessive amount of starch, so it is recommended to wash your potatoes.

Other Awesome Side Dishes

There are a lot of “sides” that give people nightmares. Side chicks, side dudes, falling on a sidewalk, waking up on the wrong side of the bed, the grass not being greener on the other side, etc.

I can go on, but I am sure a lot of you all reading this are having PTSD, so I will stop and talk about “sides” that we all love.
